NIMBLE PHYSIO with

"Why is it called Red String Theory?"
Because this is my house:

Hello, I'm Nimble Johnson (he/him). I'm a physio with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Physiotherapy degree. I am trans and neurodivergent.

My experience is primarily as a home-visit physio with a wide range of clients and conditions, from paediatric to older adults, with a special focus in neurological disorders. Although these are very different areas, the common threads throughout my career has been complexity and creativity. I like coming up with unique ideas to fit exercise into someone's life, especially when what they need is too complex for generic treatment plans. I have also always enjoyed being a mobile physio, so I can go right to the places where people move and exercise, to help them actually implement the treatments that I think will help.

Red String Theory

When you're in trans community spaces, it doesn't take long to notice how common it is for trans people to also be bendy, autistic, tired, and in pain. I started researching deeper into this overlap of being trans and disability, and communicating what I was finding to my community. That evolved into Red String Theory – a name I started to use among friends because of the literal red string on a corkboard in my house.

I have been gathering information on Red String for over five years, with conversations between people in the disabled community, health professionals in this space, and keeping up with the research and treatments. Now, I am taking the leap to being an independent physio, working with Red String conditions.

I'm hoping to not only treat people one-on-one to improve their lives, but also develop educational resources and advocate for the community, as healthcare and the general population becomes more aware of “hypermobility and co.”

My values

I highly prioritise the autonomy and right to self-determination of everyone I work with. I am nonetheless a healthcare worker who has been trained within the western medical model. I hold a position of power in this role over my clients, which comes with certain blind spots. I will do everything I can to be conscious of the power balance in this dynamic, and to be accountable if necessary.

I hold the following privileges that influence my life and practice:
White and white-passing
Male passing
(well, depends on the day)
australian citizen and settler on stolen lands
English first language
Middle class
Tertiary educated
Straight-sized
Able-bodied

I would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. It is on their land that Red String Healthcare has been imagined and created, and it will be on this land that it hopefully continues to grow. It would not exist without the healing practices that have taken place here for thousands of years.

The Indigenous peoples of this land have never ceded their sovereignty, and I would like to pay my respects to the resistance efforts against colonisation that continue to this day.
Always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
